With a history and character as fascinating and diverse as
it's population of 130 ethnic groups, Myanmar promises the
traveler an unforgettable experience and spectacular
impressions of a distinctive culture. Dubbed "Land of Gold",
it is one of the largest countries in South-east Asia,
stretching 2000 km from north to south.
Traveling to Myanmar is not only a voyage into a different
geographic region, but also a voyage back in time. How far
back in time you can travel depends on the destinations you
choose to visit. Myanmar's capital Yangon can take you back
20 or 30 years compared to most other capital cities in
South East Asia, However, a visit to the backwash hill
tribes is more like a voyage into the middle ages!
Although the country was originally called Burma, in the
native tongue Burma's name has always been Myanmar. In 1989
the Burmese government issued a decree that the country be
known by the name of Myanmar among the international
community.
